The expedition took us into the field for more than two weeks. Upon returning to Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, we visited the Lola Ya Bonobo Sanctuary where I was finally able to see these intriguing animals up close. The sanctuary is home to more than 50 bonobos and is an excellent place to gain an understanding of how similar these great apes are to humans. Staring into the face of a young bonobo is a remarkable experience.
