Oahu is just 27 miles (42 kilometers) away from Molokai across the Kaiwi Channel, but it could be another universe. Nearly a million people live on Oahu, while Molokai has just 8,000 residents. Oahu has Waikiki skyscrapers. Molokai has no building taller than a palm tree. Oahu is one of Hawaii's most touristed islands and sees more than eight million visitors a year; Molokai sees only 80,000. Oahu has nightlife, Molokai has sunsets and stars.
