The Eco Trip
A visit to Patagonia is an adventure-travel rite of passage, and the uninitiated tend to make their journeys between December and March, when the region is packed with other pilgrims. "Most people think the season's over after March," says Pam Bryan, who with her husband, Bill, co-founded outfitter Off the Beaten Path. "But in April the autumn leaves are turning colors, the wildlife is more active, and the summer crowds are gone." The Bryans' April itinerary (led by both Pam and Bill) hits all of the region's highlights: Mount Fitz Roy, the Perito Moreno Glacier, and Torres del Paine National Park. The journey culminates with four nights at the Explora Lodge, which, in addition to its stunning location and cushy amenities, gives back by training Torres park rangers in Leave No Trace ethics.
