An epic adventure of greed, magic, and murder, this film captures the legendary dark and youthful years of Tibet's greatest mystic, Milarepa. After a final destructive act of spite inflicted upon his family, Thöpaga ultimately finds redemption and freedom from the evil karma that haunts him. The story has become an ultimate lesson of sinner-turned-saint that has inspired followers for 900 years. Directed by Neten Chokling Rinpoche, a current spiritual leader and the fourth reincarnation of a great Tibetan meditation master.

    Andrew Walton
    76 min/Canada-USA/2006
    LA Premiere

Youthful angst and drunken debauchery is no match for a dog sled in the Arctic wild. So Stanley Jr. is abruptly sobered by nature and the Native Gwich'in roots of his father as his urban lifestyle is confronted by the unforgiving Canadian Yukon. When Stanley Jr. and Stanley Sr. reunite, their respective worlds collide and this father-son journey triggers larger metaphors between modernity and tradition, pop culture and nature, addiction and independence; and ultimately embarks on the quest we all seek: to know who we are and where we belong.

Her father was one of the many "boat-people" who fled Vietnam after the fall of Saigon in 1975, and one of the few who found asylum in Israel. Now, as one of four Hebrew-speaking daughters who have never seen their native land, Vaan Nguyen travels to Vietnam for the first time with her father, hoping to reclaim his lost land, and search for her own identity in a place that could also be considered home. Their journey becomes a parable on the loss of identity and the fate of refugees.

Ezra is against the occupation, yet he's an Israeli. His partner Selim is a Palestinian whose protests against the occupation landed him in jail at the age of 15. Ezra is a simple plumber whose courage and cheek take on prophet-like proportions as he travels across the country risking his life to protest the walls, the fences, and the military checkpoints that divide these two nations. Edit and Samira, a lesbian couple, try to figure out how to bridge the divide between their cultures as injustices such as work visas and harassment strain their still hopeful and compassionate relationship. These stories are skillfully interwoven with haunting archival footage from Israel in the 1950s, to contrast the ideals at the birth of the "holy land" with the reality of the country today—an Israel mired in the rubble of occupation.

Her mother begrudgingly relents, but when Mariam arrives at the bakery, she learns that she still does not have enough money. Determined to get the cake, she sets out to brave the obstacles and land some cash, but her initial efforts are futile. In an act of desperation, Mariam enlists the help of her younger sister, and together, they come up with a scheme to try to raise enough money to buy the cake in time. In Make A Wish, what begins as a simple trip to the bakery turns into a journey that depicts not only the subtle tensions of a politically charged environment, but also illustrates the grief that can only result from growing up under occupation.

The small island of Rapanui (Easter Island), three thousand miles off the coast of Chile, is best known for its monumental monolithic statues, the Moai. Yet, the island has other secrets such as the beautiful and extremely powerful petroglyph carvings written mostly in the Rongorongo hieroglyphics of the Rapanui people. In this short documentary, artists create rubbings of the petroglyphs to share their relevance as virtual records of time, events, and life of past generations.

In these fast times, the Numurindi people are still guided by the seasons and the stories of the Dreamtime. They live in southeast Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia. There, western society operates on two seasons, wet and dry, but the Numurindi have five. They have developed a culture where all things past and present, including the weather, are interrelated and extend to previous generations together with the animal and plant kingdom. This observational documentary begins with Moses Numamurdirdi, who guides the viewer through the 12 months of the five seasons, and gives insight into a way of life that is rarely seen by western society.
