The American badger is one of the prairie dogs toughest enemies. Adult badgers are about 30 inches (76 centimeters) long, weigh about 15 pounds (6.8 kilograms), and have long, sharp claws for digging.
In daylight, badgers attack by rushing into a colony and trying to catch a prairie dog before it can escape into a burrow. At night, badgers search for sleeping victims by enlarging prairie dog burrows. Burrows usually have two entrances, so that prairie dogs can escape out the back entrance if a badger starts to dig at the front entrance.
