Galápagos Giant Tortoises

The Galápagos giant tortoise is among the world’s largest tortoises—it can weigh more than 500 pounds (227 kilograms)! When faced with danger, a tortoise draws its legs inside its shell for protection (lower left). The shell itself is made of bone (lower right).
