1783: First Human Flight
Montgolfier brothers Joseph and Jacques-Étienne, papermakers by trade, load two volunteers into their ornately colored silk-and-paper hot air balloon and send them aloft in November of 1783, achieving the first ever manned flight. The accomplishment followed successful public demonstrations by the brothers earlier that year of an unmanned balloon and one loaded with farm animals.
