German engineer Otto Lilienthal publishes a book explaining how the fundamentals of bird flight could be applied to human flight. Lilienthal goes on to experiment extensively with hang gliders, trying monoplane and biplane configurations and tweaking his designs to increase maneuverability. He died in 1896 in a glider accident, but his work would inspire dozens of future aviation enthusiasts, including Orville and Wilbur Wright.
