On December 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville Wright boards Flyer I, a biplane glider made of spruce and linen and outfitted with a 12-horsepower engine with twin rear propellers. At 10:35 a.m., as his brother Wilbur looks on, Orville launches from a guiderail and becomes the first person to take flight in a powered, controllable aircraft. The famous flight spans 120 feet (36.6 meters) and lasts just 12 seconds. |
