1999: Around-the-World Balloon Trip
On March 21, 1999, balloonists Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones land their Breitling Orbiter 3 in Egypt and become the first to circle the Earth nonstop in a balloon. The flight, which earned the team a one-million-dollar prize, began in the Swiss Alps, lasted 20 days, and covered 25,361 miles (40,814 kilometers).
