3rd Century B.C.: Chinese Invention of the Compass

Most evidence indicates the Chinese were using rudimentary compasses during the Qin dynasty (221 to 206 B.C.), but some scholars believe the devices were in use there up to 300 years earlier. The first compasses consisted of a bronze plate and a spoon-shaped pointer made of magnetic lodestone. They were likely used first to orient buildings and later to navigate.
