1909: First to Reach North Pole  

Robert Edwin Peary, his trusted assistant Matthew A. Henson, and four Inuit guides become the first to reach the North Pole on April 6, 1909. The journey, which began on Ellesmere Island in northern Canada, takes 36 days and involves 23 men, 133 dogs, and 19 sleds.
