Circa 4000 B.C.: First Sailing Vessels

Around 4000 B.C., Egyptians begin using boats with sails to ply the eastern Mediterranean and the Nile River. These primitive square-sailed ships help give rise to early dynastic Egypt by facilitating travel, trade, and war.
