1492: Columbus Sets Sail for Asia

In search of a westerly route to the riches of the East, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sets sail in August of 1492 from Spain. In mid-October, his three ships land in the Bahamas, the sailors believing the islands to be the East Indies. He is widely credited with discovering the Americas, though Vikings had explored the North American coast some 500 years earlier.
