1977: Hydrothermal Vents Discovered

In 1977, scientists aboard the submersible Alvin discover hydrothermal vents on the lightless Pacific Ocean floor. Researchers are shocked to discover that these underwater geysers, where no sunlight ever reaches and which spew superhot, mineral-rich water, actually teem with life, including bacteria, worms, shrimp, and clams.
