As a research fellow with National Geographic's Remote Imaging Program, Mike Heithaus served as the host of the
Crittercam television series from 2002 to 2003.
At only age five, Mike knew he would pursue scientific research. Today he is living his dream. Fascinated with the adaptations and behavior of all animals, Heithaus has worked not only with species as humble as snails and stream fish, but also with many large marine species such as dolphins, whales, sharks, and sea turtles.
As one of the world's leading shark scientists, Mike has done extensive research in Australia's Shark Bay. Using Crittercam, he discovered how tiger sharks influence habitat use and behavior of some of their prey species, including sea turtles, dugongs, and bottlenose dolphins.
To date, Mike has traveled all over the world for his own work and to help other scientists deploy Crittercam. He has completed over a hundred successful Crittercam deployments on tiger, nurse, and hammerhead sharks; leatherback, green, and loggerhead sea turtles; humpback, bowhead, pilot, false killer, and killer whales; gray and Hawaiian monk seals; lions and hyenas; and other species.
