At dawn and dusk in spring, the male woodcock soars into the air to begin his mating ritual. The refuges two units protect the essential habitat of the American woodcock as well as other waterfowl and forest wildlife species. Contains two wilderness areas. 24,409 acres [9,878 hectares]. Facilities: hiking, boating, bicycling, fishing, hunting, winter sports. Open all year, dawn to dusk.
