Stretching along Maine’s southern coast from Kittery to Cape Elizabeth, this refuge’s ten units offer closeup looks at the fragile and dynamic world of the tidal estuary. The unit at Wells contains the 1-mile-long [1.6-kilometer-long] self-guided Carson Trail. Breeding and migrating shorebirds, wading birds, waterfowl, and raptors also featured. 5,000 acres [2,023.4 hectares]. Facilities include hiking, canoeing, hunting, picnic areas, scenic drives, cross-country skiing, handicapped access. Open all year, dawn to dusk.
