Masked in shadows most of the day, the 2,000-foot-deep [609.6-meter-deep] gorge carved by the Gunnison River is a wild, awesome place. North and South Rim Drives (not connected) take visitors to the brink of the canyon; extremely fit hikers can descend unmarked trails to the canyon’s bottom. Sheer, steep walls challenge experienced climbers. 20,766 acres [8,403.7 hectares]. Facilities include 102 campsites, hiking, climbing, fishing, picnic areas, scenic drives.
