Wild and unspoiled, the western side of Cape Breton Island, in Canada’s Nova Scotia, draws thousands of visitors every summer. A spectacular loop drive called Cabot Trail that traverses part of the island is considered one of the most beautiful in North America. It passes through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, winding along steep cliffs that can scare the fainthearted. Hiking trails in the park offer great forest and coast views, and there are beaches for sunning and swimming. Outside the park, near the southeast tip of the island, the huge, reconstructed French fortress of Louisbourg is open to the public.
