These spectacular red-rock canyons, spires, and mesas rival any natural site in the Southwest. The same is true of their cultural legacy: ancient Basketmaker pithouses, the remains of ancestral Puebloan dwellings on 1,000-foot [304.8-meter] cliffs, and the many reminders of the Navajo past and present. Navajo guides offer tours into the canyons; only the White House ruin may be visited without a guide. North and South Rim Drives have many scenic overlooks. 83,840 acres [33,928.8 hectares]. Facilities include 75 campsites, food services, hiking, horseback riding, jeep tour, scenic drives, handicapped access. Open all year. Off US 191, about 230 miles [370.2 kilometers] east of Grand Canyon NP. +1 520 674 5500.
