Part of the Canadian Shield, the Laurentian uplands reach right across Quebec from near Ottawa in the west to the Sauguenay in the east. But for Montrealers, and for countless winter and summer vacationers from Canada and the United States, the bit of the Laurentians that counts is the hilly country northwest of Montreal, once reached by le p'tit train du Nord (the little train of the north) and now by Trans-Canada 15 (Visitor Information Maison de Tourisme des Laurentides, 14142 rue de La Chapelle RRI, St. Jerome, 1 450 436 8532).
