Running northward 80 miles [128 kilometers] from Lake Champlain and the U.S. border to the St. Lawrence at the town of Sorel, the valley of the Richelieu River has long served as a corridor of movement and as a focal point of national rivalries. Its contemporary role is an entirely peaceful one. The agricultural lands of its lower course are some of the most fertile in Quebec, while its waterways and countryside form a popular recreational area for its many visitors.
