On Jan. 8, 1815, in the last major land battle in the War of 1812, Gen. Andrew Jackson’s makeshift command defeated British regulars at Chalmette Plantation, on the banks of the Mississippi River. The two-hour battle clinched America’s claim to the Louisiana Purchase, thus facilitating westward expansion. Begin at the Visitor Center, which has a film and exhibits. The winding road through the 141-acre [57-hectare] battlefield park is dotted with interpretive plaques. (6 miles [9.7 kilometers] East via La. 46. +1 504 589 4430)
