Update, September 2005: As New Orleans recovers from Hurricane Katrina, we invite you to find out how you can help.
Steamy New Orleans has a feel all its own, a free-spiritedness tempered by Catholic tradition. Shady streets, especially in the French Quarter, are lined with old homes garnished with ornate iron grillwork. Set between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, New Orleans draws legions of tourists every year—many for the raucous Mardi Gras street carnival. Thousands also come for the Jazz and Heritage Festival, a celebration of the music form that has been nurtured here. Also a draw are the restaurants, many drawing on the French and Cajun cultures that run through all aspects of the city.
