Chartered in 1701, the City of Brotherly Love is the birthplace of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and Constitution. The Waterfront and Historic Park preserves the birthplaces of these and other firsts, many involving the city’s seeming patron saint, Benjamin Franklin. Political glory was followed by industrial eminence, and much of Philly beyond the Old City retains its blue-collar feistiness. That factory-town flavor is fading as millennial urban renewal projects join first-rate museums and plentiful parks in enhancing the livability of this fourth largest U.S. city.
