In late summer, Great Blue and Green Herons, Great and Snowy Egrets, and Black-crowned Night-Heron feed in the wetlands, sometimes joined by Little Blue and Tricolored (rare) Herons, Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, and Glossy Ibis. Least Bittern, Common Moorhen, Marsh Wren, and Swamp Sparrow nest in these marshes, along with a selection of dabbling ducks, and in winter Northern Harrier hunts the open spaces along with an occasional Short-eared Owl.
When water levels are right in the tidal marshes and managed impoundments, you may find such common migrant shorebird species as Black-bellied Plover; Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs; and Semipalmated, Least, and Pectoral Sandpipers. As fall arrives, so do flocks of geese and ducks—mostly dabblers such as Northern Shoveler, Northern Pintail, and Green-winged Teal, with an assortment of divers intermixed.
