North America’s only walled city has long outgrown its ramparts, spilling across surrounding countryside. The hub of Quebecois life today—the street known as the Grande Allée, home of Quebec Province’s parliament—lies outside the old Upper Town. But within the old city walls a quaint, European brand of enchantment awaits: Bounded by gray stone houses and churches, small streets twist in the shadow of the iconic, cliffside Château Frontenac hotel, as do the mighty St. Lawrence River and the walkways of Lower Town, many precipitous feet below.
