Set in a glacial basin ringed by mountains, Arapaho offers carefully maintained irrigated meadows that provide essential nesting habitat for waterfowl such as gadwall, lesser scaup, mallard, and wigeon. Black-crowned night herons breed along the Illinois River and sage grouse winter in upland hills.
