"This is the place," Brigham Young reportedly said on reaching the Salt Lake area in 1847. The town he founded here as a haven from religious persecution has grown into Utah’s largest city and state capital. For many, it’s still "the place," though perhaps more for its proximity to Wasatch Range ski resorts, growing high-tech economy, and active, outdoor lifestyle. Still, the Mormon Church is at the heart of Salt Lake, figuratively and literally. In the city center the soaring, spired Salt Lake Temple and domed Mormon Tabernacle lord over the walled Temple Square.
