Since it clad itself in brick after the Great Fire of 1889, drizzly Seattle has raised its streets, regraded its steep waterfront, buried its tidelands, sacrificed a river, binged on skyscrapers—and it’s still changing, for the better, most would agree. Today’s Seattleites are blessed with cultural and entertainment institutions, breathtaking natural surroundings, an outrageous number of premium-coffee shops, and a standard of living bolstered by the aerospace and computer industries.
