With some 100 art galleries and studios listed in its phone book, the small, adobe-accented town of Taos may well be the West’s leading center for the arts. Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo cultures coexist here, creating a cultural soup that flavors everything from local cuisine to crafts and clothing. Native American culture thrives undiluted at centuries-old, visitor-friendly Taos Pueblo, just north of Taos. Here 200 Indians forsake electricity to live in one of the United States’ largest multistory pueblos, hauling river water and baking in outdoor, earthen ovens.
