Spiked with some of the oldest rock on the continent, darkened by ponderosa pines, and grazed by bison, the Delaware-size Black Hills region can seem elemental, unchanging. But even here the rough edges have been smoothed a bit, most notably at Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial, the hills’ other, unfinished megasculpture. And while the area’s erstwhile gold rush towns still smell of gun smoke and gambling, the Mammoth Site, in Hot Springs, offers an eye on Ice Age giants—and new meaning to “Old West.”
