Laid-back and postcard-perfect, the Florida Keys are strewn with swaying palm trees and sandy beaches. This chain of subtropical islands, linked by the Overseas Highway (U.S. 1), ends in Key West, a fanciful town that’s as much a state of mind as it is a prime vacation spot. Artists, writers, fishers, and retirees make their homes in the Keys, amid fragile natural resources that include coral reefs, mangroves, great white herons, and Key deer, a miniature subspecies of Virginia white-tailed deer.
