Packed with history, the Outer Banks are spread along the coast of North Carolina. It was here that the people of Roanoke Island settled—and disappeared—and here that the Wright Brothers took to the sky in the first powered airplane flight. In the 18th century pirates hid their spoils on the islands, and ships regularly sank offshore, done in by the rough seas. A few hardy souls live on the sand dune covered islands, where the rich bird life draws a steady stream of birders. Sportfishing is also popular, as are the seemingly endless beaches.
