An excursion up the fjord-like Howe Sound to the logging town of Squamish and the internationally renowned ski resort of Whistler encompasses many of the attractions that make West Coast life so enjoyable.
Grandly named the Sea to Sky Highway, Hwy. 99 is not the only way to make this trip, at least as far as Squamish. In the 1950s, the Pacific Great Eastern Railway finally completed its line along the shore of the sound to North Vancouver. Its track is now used by B.C. Rail (+1 604 984 5236) as well as by tour trains pulled by the Royal Hudson steam locomotive No. 2860 (+1 604 688 7246). Travelers can take the train one way to Squamish and sail back aboard the M.V. Britannia, the entry into Burrard Inlet making an unforgettable end to the excursion.
North of Horseshoe Bay, a ferry port for boats to Vancouver Island, road and rail squeeze together between cliff and shoreline with spectacular views of Howe Sound in its mountain setting.
