Canada’s westernmost metropolis revels in its setting, a peninsula against often snowcapped mountains. Many residents are lured by the city’s prosperity, which owes much to Vancouver’s strategic Pacific Rim location on an ice-free deepwater harbor. Nearly all are won over by the ease of escape: A few minutes’ drive from this spotless, often drizzly city yields wilderness wonders and the prospect of a day spent on skis, on a boat, or on the trail. In-town attractions include museums, the restored, circa-1880s Gastown district, and Stanley Park, with its zoo, arboretum, aquarium, and gardens.
