More than 200 years after George Washington chose it as the site of the U.S. capital, Washington thrives as a cosmopolitan hub of politics and government. Everywhere there are reminders that this is the seat of the nation: the Capitol itself, the White House, the Smithsonian Institution and its myriad museums, and a legion of memorials and monuments. Colorful neighborhoods are dotted with small parks, and D.C. is a short distance from historical landmarks such as Virginia’s Mount Vernon and outdoor attractions like Shenandoah National Park, also in Virginia.
