Teddy Roosevelt dubbed this forest’s Wapiti Valley “the most scenic 52 miles [83.7 kilometers] in the United States.” Wapiti (elk) find a year-round home here in the lee of the Absaroka and Beartooth Ranges, as do bighorn sheep, grizzlies, moose, and deer. Contains parts or all of five wilderness areas. 2,433,000 acres [984,600.2 hectares]. Facilities include 374 campsites, food services, hiking, boating, boat ramp, fishing, horseback riding, hunting, picnic areas, winter sports.
