Surrounded by the Inyo National Forest, this monument boasts a spectacular formation of basalt columns 60 feet [18.3 meters] high, which were born of the fire of volcanic eruptions and carved by the ice of overriding glaciers. At Rainbow Falls, water plunges 101 feet [30.8 meters] over a rhyodacite cliff. 798 acres [322.9 hectares]. Facilities include 21 campsites (open July-Oct.), hiking, fishing, shuttle bus.
