The National Geographic Society’s financial highlights illustrate
how contributions from public and private sources help support
vital projects within the Society’s Mission Programs in the
areas of research, conservation, exploration, education, and public
outreach. While all of National Geographic’s activities advance
its mission, the programs described in this report directly fulfill
key scientific and education objectives. Mission Programs’ activities
are presented in the context of the Society’s overall financial
picture.
Thanks in part to philanthropic giving, National Geographic
was able to increase the level of spending on its Mission Programs
in 2007 as in 2006. A one-time generous gift received through an
estate contributed to a significant rise in contributions for 2007.
A new endowment created to support National Geographic’s core
programs in research, conservation, and exploration began generating
investment earnings that help expand grantmaking. Also, two entirely
new grant programs were established during 2007 thanks to operating
funding from major donors. These new grants support exploratory
fieldwork and destination-based conservation projects tied to our
travel programs. Education Foundation grantmaking continues to
be supported by earnings from endowments established through private
contributions.

The
National Geographic Society thanks all of its donors for contributing
so generously to its work. You make possible the impact we have
on the planet and its people.
