National Geographic’s work is made possible through the generous support of individuals and organizations. There are many ways to support the mission of the National Geographic Society. Your gift is a testament to your commitment to inspire people to care about the planet.

Gifts to National Geographic can be made through the following opportunities:

  • Annual gifts of cash, securities, and other assets
  • Planned gifts that provide a lasting legacy for you and the Society
  • Corporate sponsorships and foundation and organization grants that support programs and major new initiatives
  • Company-matched gifts through your employer

Annual Gifts

The easiest way to contribute to the Society’s ongoing work is through an outright cash, check, or credit card donation.

Donors who give annual gifts of $1,000 (U.S.) are eligible for membership in the Grosvenor Council. These faithful members receive special access and exclusive travel opportunities with National Geographic. For information on the Grosvenor Council, contact Anna Rathmann at +1 202 775 6710 or via email at arathman@ngs.org.

Honoring a Friend or Family Member
A contribution to National Geographic in honor or memory of a family member, friend, or colleague can be a wonderful tribute. With your permission, we can send a card to the persons you designate to notify them of your contribution.

Gifts of Appreciated Securities
Stock that has increased in value is one of the most popular assets used for charitable giving, once it has been held for a minimum of one year. Making a gift of securities to the Society offers you the chance to help our organization while realizing many important benefits for yourself.

To make a gift or receive more information, contact the Society by phone at 800 373 1717 (U.S. and Canada only) or +1 202 862 8638, or via email at givinginfo@ngs.org, or go online to nationalgeographic.org/donate.

Planned Gifts

Planned giving is a great way to meet your own estate and financial goals while providing an ongoing commitment to the Society’s work for generations to come. Opportunities include:

Bequests
One of the simplest ways to make a gift to the National Geographic Society is through a bequest in your will or living trust. A bequest is a gift of any amount or form made outright to the Society in your will. Charitable bequests may be designated when a new will is executed, or added to an existing will through a codicil.

Sample Bequest Language: You can name the National Geographic Society as a direct beneficiary of a specific amount of money or a percentage of your estate: “I give, devise, and bequeath to the National Geographic Society, a nonprofit corporation located in Washington, D.C., the sum of $_______ (or ___ percent of my estate; or the property described herein) for its general purposes.”

Life Income Plans—The Gifts that Give Back
By establishing a life income gift with National Geographic, such as a Charitable Gift Annuity or a Charitable Remainder Trust, you can increase your income and reduce your taxes.

Retirement Plan Assets/Life Insurance
Using these assets to give a gift to National Geographic can often be a tax-wise decision. By making the Society the beneficiary of an existing policy, you make good use of your resources and expand your ability to make a significant gift.

Real Estate
Giving a gift of real estate such as your house, farm, or commercial property allows you to preserve your cash assets, receive significant tax and income advantages, and make a larger charitable gift than anticipated.

Gardiner Greene Hubbard Society
The Hubbard Society was named after National Geographic’s first president and honors donors who have included the Society in their will or other estate plans. If you already qualify as a member or wish to join, please contact John-Joseph van Haelewyn, director of planned giving, at 800 226 4438 or via email at jvanhael@ngs.org.
