Isla Espirtu Santo, Baja California
Photograph by Bill Hatcher/Image Collection
A kayaker paddles through the inlets of Isla Espiritu Santo and into the deep blue yonder. Baja California’s rich waters contain one of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth, including hundreds of fish and 31 different species of marine mammals like dolphins, whales, and seals. The aquatic environment is a stark contrast to the surrounding arid desert, although it, too, is home to a fascinating array of plants and animals, some of which are not found anywhere else in the world.
