One of Delmarva's most famous events is the annual pony penning and auction on Chincoteague Island every July. All year long, these wild horses graze in plain view of visitors along the beaches of neighboring Assateague Island, but every summer they are herded across the channel at low tide to Chincoteague where a few are auctioned off as thousands of festival-goers watch. The history of the event dates back hundreds of years and is just one example of Delmarva's rich cultural heritage.
