How to Become an Aqua Hero:
Put on your National Geographic reporters hat!
- Investigate a river or river system you care about. Identify an issue or problem facing the river.
- Devise an extraordinary, creative, workable solution to the problem and a plan to implement your solution, either on your own or with members of your community. (The solution need not be implemented before the contest deadline.)
- Inform your community about the problem and your solution.
- Write an article, make a video, or create a Web page to show what you did!
Entries must be received by Monday, August 6, 2001.
Official Contest Rules
Follow all rules carefully or your entry will be disqualified.
Eligibility:
- NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY AND A PURCHASE WILL NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. You must be entering Kindergarten through 12th grade in the Fall of 2001 and be a resident of the United States to be eligible to take part in this Contest. Employees of the National Geographic Society, The Coca-Cola Company, and The Conservation Fund (collectively the Sponsors), their agents and bottlers, and their immediate families or members of the same household are not eligible.
Contest Entries:
Submit your entry in one of the following formats:
- A video in the style of a television report (no longer than five minutes; High-Quality VHS format)
- A magazine or newspaper story, laid out on a poster (no larger than 22" x 28")
- A Web page
Be creative! Use your own photos, drawings, and captions. Draft your own maps and graphs. Show what your solution is and how you informed your community.
Your entry must be the result of your own work; must not include works of any other person or entity; and must not have been previously broadcast, published, or awarded a prize. Entries must not infringe on the rights of any third party including copyright patent or trademark rights, and must not violate any persons right of privacy or publicity. You must have all right, title, and interest in your submission and the ability to freely transfer any and all interest in the submission. Photos, video, and Web pages that include images of people must be accompanied by a personal release from each person in the image.
Forms You Must Submit:
- With your entry, you must submit an Aqua Heroes Contest Entry Submission Form.
- If your entry includes photos or video that include images of people, you must submit a personal release form for each person. See General Conditions paragraph, below, for details about personal releases.

- Poster: Roll poster in a tube or send flat. Do not fold posters.
- Web Page: Web page entries will only be accepted via a completed Aqua Heroes Contest Entry Submission Form. Send a completed formincluding the URL of your Web pageto the address above. Do NOT use e-mail.
Entries are limited to one per person. To be eligible, entries must be
- Received by Monday, August 6, 2001
- Accompanied by a completed Aqua Heroes Contest Entry Submission Form that is signed by your parent or legal guardian
- Accompanied by a personal release from each person pictured in a photo or video (including Web entries)
Judging:
A panel of judges will choose winners on the basis of creativity, originality, logic, and execution. (Creativity will determine a winner in case of a tie.) Each entry must clearly show:
- What was the original question, issue, or problem that you identified?
- What action did you suggest or take to solve the problem or address the issue?
- How do you plan to implement your solution, either on your own or with members of your community? (The solution need not be implemented before the contest deadline.)
- How did you bring this issue, and your actions, to the attention of your community?
Winning:
Winners will be selected on or about August 15, 2001, and will be notified by phone and/or by mail by Monday, August 20, 2001. One Grand Prize winner will be chosen. One First, Second, and Third place prize will be awarded in each eligible age group: KindergartenGrade 4, Grades 58, and Grades 912. The Grand Prize winner will be featured in the Kids Did It! section of a future issue of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC WORLD magazine.
Prizes provided by the National Geographic Society.
- Grand Prize: Free passage for a family of four (two adults, two children) on a National Geographic Expeditions Family Adventure of your choosing within North America, approximate retail value (ARV) $13,000. Prize includes all accommodations and travel expenses outlined in the National Geographic Expeditions catalog, plus round-trip airfare from an airport within the United States. Winner must select the trip by December 31, 2001, and all travel must be completed by December 30, 2002; exact dates for the trip will be confirmed at least two months prior to departure; blackout dates and other restrictions may apply. The prize does not include taxes or any other expenses not specifically listed herein. If the winner cannot take the trip on the specified date, the prize may be forfeited and an alternative winner may be selected.
- Cash Prizes: First Prize: $500 cash; Second Prize: $250 cash; Third Prize: $100 cash
General Conditions:
All entries become the property of the Sponsors, will not be acknowledged or returned, and may be used in public information programs. The Sponsors are not responsible for lost, late, misdirected, mutilated, incomplete, illegible, stolen, damaged, or postage-due mail entries. The Sponsors are not responsible if, for any reason, your submission is destroyed or becomes corrupted or cannot be viewed or read in the manner you have intended. The Sponsors may insert links to and from their Web sites to or from any Web page entry. The Sponsors may use each winners name, photograph, likeness, and/or voice in any future publicity or advertising, worldwide and in perpetuity, without compensation or approval (except where prohibited by law). Entrants must own all rights to any photos and video submitted as part of their entry, including Web entries. Photos, video, and Web entries that include images of people must be accompanied by a personal release from each person in the image granting the entrant and the Sponsors rights to copy and display the image; failure to include a personal release for each person shown may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner. Additionally, winners must complete, sign, and return an affidavit of eligibility, assignment of rights, and liability release within fifteen (15) days of receipt of prize notification. Noncompliance or return of prize notification as undeliverable will result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner. The Sponsors assume no responsibility for any losses, injuries, or damages resulting from participation in the Contest or the receipt, acceptance, or use of any prize awarded hereunder. Prizes are not redeemable for cash. No prize transfer, assignment, or substitution except by Sponsors for reason of unavailability in which case a prize of equal or greater value will be awarded. Contest consists of one round. By participating, entrants agree to be bound by the official rules and the decisions of the judges. All federal, state, and local taxes are the sole responsibility of the winners. This contest is VOID WHERE PROHIBITED and is subject to federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
