Frozen in time, a pink granite woman stands watch over an entrance to the enormous Temple of Amun at Karnak. Believed by some to be Ramses II's Queen Nefertari, the carving is part of a much larger colossus.

Sprawling over about 250 acres (101 hectares) near the city of Luxor, the temple complex of Amun at Karnak is the largest ever built. It was rebuilt and adorned by generation after generation of pharaohs. The oldest remains found date to before 1600 B.C.
