EXPLORING CAVES: JOURNEYS INTO THE EARTH
Probing the Mysteries of a World Beneath Our Feet

WASHINGTON—Two veteran cavers, Nancy Holler Aulenbach and Hazel Barton, take young readers deep underground as they probe the mysterious world beneath our feet in a new children’s book from National Geographic.

EXPLORING CAVES: JOURNEYS INTO THE EARTH (National Geographic Books, ISBN 0-7922-7721-X, March 2001, $17.95), by Aulenbach and Barton, with Marfé Feguson Delano, follows the cavers’ adventures as they explore the tunnels and chambers of ice caves in Greenland, underwater caves in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula and terrestrial caves in the United States.

Readers discover how caves are formed and mapped, and learn about cave-dwelling creatures, including microscopic organisms that help scientists understand the origins of life on earth and may hold clues to finding cures for life-threatening diseases.

The book is illustrated with stunning images taken by an IMAX® theatre film crew, who filmed Aulenbach and Barton for a new MacGillivray Freeman movie for IMAX® theatres, “Journey into Amazing Caves”, which opens across the country this month.

EXPLORING CAVES contains a list of caving organizations and Web sites for finding caves that are open to the public, making the book a useful family reference for budding spelunkers.
