NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TO PUBLISH TWENTIETH LOCAL-LANGUAGE EDITION

WASHINGTON—With the launch of the Thai edition of National Geographic magazine in August 2001, the famous yellow-bordered magazine will be available in 20 local-language editions. One in five National Geographic readers now reads the magazine in a language other than English.

The Thai edition of National Geographic will be produced under license from the National Geographic Society by Amarin Printing and Publishing Public Company Limited, one of the largest printing and publishing companies in Thailand, with more than 20 years experience. Amarin publishes magazines and books, including the literary works of the Thai royal family. Amarin Book Center Co., Ltd. is a subsidiary publications distribution arm of the company.

The Thai edition of National Geographic magazine will be published monthly and will follow closely the editorial content of the English-language original in the same size format.

“We are pleased and privileged to become the licensed publisher of the 20th local-language edition of National Geographic magazine,” said Chukiat Utakapan, president and CEO of Amarin Printing and Publishing. “It is an honor to bring the wonders of the geographic world to Thai readers in the Thai language.”

Published in English since 1888, National Geographic magazine is now also published in Japanese, Spanish (for Spain and Latin America), Italian, Greek, Hebrew, French, German, Polish, Korean, Portuguese (for Brazil), Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Dutch and Chinese traditional character set. Editions in Portugal and Turkey will launch later this spring. The magazine has a total circulation of over 10 million and is read in every country of the world.

“Giving people access to the world through National Geographic’s incomparable images and words in their own language is a compelling way to extend the Society’s mission to spread geographic knowledge,” said Society President and CEO John Fahey. “Publishing the magazine in Thailand is a natural extension of our brand in this marketplace, and builds on the success of the National Geographic Channels International that launched in Thailand in 1999.”

The official journal of the Society, National Geographic magazine provides in-depth editorial coverage of cultures, nature, science, technology and conservation issues and has set the standard for excellence in reporting, photography and mapmaking.

The National Geographic Society is the world’s largest nonprofit scientific and educational organization. The 113-year-old Society reflects the world through magazines, books, maps, television and interactive media. It has funded 7,000 scientific research projects around the globe and supports an education program combating geographic illiteracy.

National Geographic Channels International is seen by nearly 100 million subscribers, in 18 languages, in 113 countries.
