National Geographic EXPLORER Special Report
Host Segment Location: Washington, D.C.

*Afghanistan’s Warriors: EXPLORER delves deep into the war-torn history of Afghanistan and asks “how might the jihad against the Soviets provide insight into the current situation in Afghanistan?” Through candid interviews with veteran war correspondents and others, EXPLORER reveals the mindset of Afghanistan’s Warriors. War journalist/filmmaker Jeff B. Harmon covered the Soviet-Afghan war in Afghanistan from three different sides, resulting in two execution orders on his life. EXPLORER also interviews former Soviet officer Mikhail Evstafiev, who served in Afghanistan; Mohammad Eshaq, a representative of the Islamic State of Afghanistan; and renowned veteran war journalist Edward Girardet, whose next article on Afghanistan will be published in an upcoming issue of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC magazine.

*Wild Anthrax: EXPLORER travels to Africa to report on natural outbreaks of anthrax among Namibia’s wild animals. This tiny organism can drop a full-grown, three-ton African elephant dead in its tracks. The disease is especially dangerous to antelope and other herbivores, but often spares lions and hyenas. And what about humans and anthrax? To understand the behavior and effects of anthrax in today’s society, a leading authority on anthrax in the wild, Dr. Peter Turnbull, speaks exclusively with EXPLORER.
