National Geographic Television Receives 13 News and Documentary Emmy Nominations

National Geographic EXPLORER receives 9 nominations

National Geographic Specials receive 2 nominations

Additional 2 nominations for a National Geographic Television Production for Thirteen/WNET New York’s Nature on PBS

(WASHINGTON, DC, July 19, 2001) National Geographic Television (NGT) has been nominated for 13 Emmys for this year’s News & Documentary Emmy Awards. NGT’s popular magazine series, National Geographic EXPLORER, received nine Emmy nominations, more than any other series (Dateline NBC and 60 Minutes II also received nine nominations). The National Geographic Specials, airing on PBS, received two nominations. The Urban Elephant, a co-production of National Geographic Television and Thirteen/WNET for the Nature series on PBS, received two nominations. The News and Documentary Emmy Awards will be presented on September 5, 2001 in New York.

National Geographic EXPLORER, hosted by Boyd Matson, airs weekends at 8 and 11 p.m. ET/PT on CNBC and is the longest-running documentary series on basic cable. The groundbreaking films that are the longest running documentary series of their kind on television today, the National Geographic Specials are now seen on PBS. Thirteen/WNET’s Nature is a weekly signature series on PBS and will celebrate its 20th anniversary season this fall. National Geographic Television has previously won a total of 109 Emmy Awards.
